The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
Congratulations to long-time American Red Cross Volunteer Elaine Clyburn on her appointment by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam to the West Tennessee Seismic Safety Commission. This appointment gives Clyburn a third three-year term on the commission as a representative for nonprofit emergency assistance agencies.
In 1811-12 West Tennessee experienced the most intense earthquake ever recorded west of the Mississippi River. That seismic activity, the New Madrid Earthquake, is considered one of the most significant geological events in the history of the United States. Today, West Tennessee continues to experience seismic activity and experts predict that the area is at risk for another event similar to that in the early 1800’s.
The West Tennessee Seismic Safety Commission consists of twelve appointed members whose responsibilities include preparing the state to respond to a major earthquake, citizen earthquake safety education, coordinating earthquake safety activities of government agencies at all levels, and the establishment and maintenance of working relationships with boards, commissions, departments and agencies or other public or private organizations.
The Mid-South Red Cross is delighted to have Elaine Clyburn appointed as a member of this most important commission.
